Star Profile: Montgomery Clift
Name: Montgomery Clift
Sure everyone loves Brando and Dean, but unless you’re in the know about your classics, audiences seem to have forgotten Montgomery Clift. The talented but troubled actor only made 18 films before his slow downslide of drugs and alcohol lead to his death in 1966.
Top 3 Films:
From Here To Eternity- The second Best Actor Oscar nomination for Clift. His heroic and stand up guy Robert E. Lee Prewitt is just as worthy as Burt Lancaster’s steamy Warden and Frank Sinatra’s Maggio.
The Heiress- Every time I watch this one, I can’t decide if Clift means to jilt Olivia de Havilland or not. Great ambiguity and period piece looks.
A Place In The Sun- Do you remember the first time you saw Monty row Shelly Winter out onto that lake? The score, the trial, the chemistry with Elizabeth Taylor. My sister had to study this one in college.
Our Favorite:
Red River- Monty stars as Matthew Garth, the adopted son of John Wayne who dares to take his cattle from him. Clift’s onscreen weight against Wayne almost steals the show.
